The Power of Words in Shaping Our Actions

Words hold more power than we often realize. It’s amazing how using words like ‘should,’ ‘have to,’ and ‘must’ can trigger resistance within ourselves, leading to procrastination and a negative mindset towards the changes we want to make.

This resistance is something I’ve noticed time and time again, from managing household chores to organizing paperwork and handling finances. The use of these words can set off a chain reaction of negative emotions and behaviors.  The impact is always the same – a downward spiral effect.

Consider this scenario: You remind yourself to empty the dishwasher, but it slips your mind. By evening, the kitchen is a chaotic mess of dirty dishes and cluttered counters. Cue the negative self-talk – feeling lazy, forgetful, and frustrated with yourself for not attending to the task earlier.

Reflecting on my own experience growing up, I recall being told by my parents to complete chores without any say in the matter. You know fun things like: emptying the dishwasher, tidying our rooms, doing laundry, or taking out the trash were non-negotiable. This lack of control often fueled frustration and resistance, common among teenagers facing similar situations.

When we impose ‘have to,’ ‘should,’ or ‘must’ on ourselves, our minds switch to autopilot, triggering resistance that hinders our actions. This unconscious cycle can trap us without realizing it.

I specialize in helping people redefine their relationship with money through the power of language.
